Sony Made a Hype Ad. The Internet Made It a Crime Scene.
Sony just dropped "It Happens on PS5," a big-budget ad stacked with GTA 6, Marvel's Wolverine, and Helldivers 2 footage.
It's supposed to hype you up for the console's lineup.
Instead the comments are getting absolutely incinerated.
Wait, Why Are People This Mad
Rewind a bit. Sony recently confirmed something that's still stinging: physical game discs are done starting January 2028.
No more new PlayStation games on disc, full stop. Digital only, going forward.
Sony's reasoning is simple â digital sales are already sitting around 82%, so this is just "following consumer trends."
Cool logic if you're Sony's spreadsheet. Less cool if you're one of the millions of people who actually collect games.
The Meme That Ate Sony's Comment Section
The internet did what the internet does: it hijacked the slogan instantly.
"Discs don't happen on PS5" is now the top reply on basically every post Sony makes right now, ad or not.
It's brutal, it's simple, and it's not stopping anytime soon.
Okay But Is the Anger Actually Fair?
Yeah, honestly â it kind of is. Here's the real problem with killing discs entirely:
No more reselling â trade in a digital game to who, exactly? That value just evaporates the second you buy it.
No more lending to friends â handing a mate a disc used to be free. Now it's either two accounts or nothing.
Total pricing control shifts to Sony â no competition from used game prices means the PlayStation Store sets the rules, permanently.
Digital's convenient. Nobody's arguing that. But convenient and fair aren't the same thing, and this is a company deciding that for you, not asking.
So Where Does This Leave Us
Sony's PR team is going to be stuck fielding "discs don't happen on PS5" for a very long time, and honestly, they earned it.
The GTA 6 and Wolverine footage looks great. Nobody's arguing about that part.
They just picked a genuinely bad week to remind everyone their next system might not let them own anything at all.
So â are you already fully digital and don't care, or are you actually going to miss having a shelf of discs?
Curious where people actually land on this one.
